Duquesne University has appropriately chosen St. Patricks Day, March 16, to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Ambassador Dan Rooney. Former Vice President Joe Biden will be the keynote speaker at a daylong celebration as Mr. Rooney’s former university pay homage to the man who turned the Steelers into champions.
The commemoration will feature panel discussions about Mr. Rooney’s career, exploring his impact as the Ambassador in Ireland and the NFL’s Rooney Rule that requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations jobs.
Moderators and panelists will include Mike Tomlin, Bill Cowher; former CIA and NSA director General Michael Hayden, Worldwide Ireland Funds CEO Kieran McLoughlin; NFL vice president Jeff Pash, and former Steelers Charlie Batch and Rocky Bleier.
The symposium will kick off a variety of events honouring Rooney during the weekend. This year’s Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day parade will be dedicated to Rooney. Members of the Rooney family and representatives from the Steelers’ organization will participate in the parade, while his legacy will be celebrated.
Rooney, along with Pittsburgh businessman Anthony J.F. O’Reilly, created The Ireland Fund, which later merged with the American Irish Foundation (AIF) to create the American Ireland Fund, the leading charitable organization benefiting Ireland.
Rooney was a driving force in the success the AIF has seen over the years, helping with the American Ireland Fund’s mission of promoting programs of peace and reconciliation, arts and culture, education and community development throughout Ireland.
They should be showing a tribute video during the event and hopefully SNUK will be part of it.
